Irvine, CA is one of the most affluent and beautiful cities in Orange County. Even so, the statewide drought has had an impact here, making water conservation more important than ever. Every drop must count.
Leaky plumbing doesn’t simply waste water — it attracts pests, damages buildings and costs money. Leak detection helps stop water waste and protect your home.
Finding a leak can be tricky. Dripping faucets are easy to identify, but leaks from damaged pipes hidden in walls or floors can be more difficult to find. Because of this, the typical home loses 2,000 to 20,000 gallons of water each year. Defective toilet flapper valves, loose fittings and cracked water supply lines contribute to waste that harms homeowners, utilities, and the environment. How to Check for a Water Leak
Determining the location of a hidden water leak takes experience and special equipment. You only need two things to see if you might have one: your home’s water meter and some time.
It’s this simple:
- Locate your water meter and make sure you know how to read it. If you need help finding and reading your water meter, it might be best to contact us for professional assistance.
- Turn off all the faucets and any appliances that use water. That includes automatic ice makers, etc. — any device that is connected to the water supply. Make sure no one uses any water during this test.
- Go to the water meter and write down the reading. Wait for 15 to 20 minutes.
- Read the meter again. Compare this to your earlier reading. If it isn’t the same, you have a leak.
This test will help to identify the presence of a large leak. Smaller leaks may still exist, but they may not use enough water to for the meter to register it. An older meter won’t be as sensitive as a newer one. Sensitivity may also vary from one brand or model to the next. The test does provide a starting point — at least you will know if there’s a big problem.
I found a water leak. What do I do now?
Even simple plumbing repairs can be messy and time-consuming. In most cases, it’s better to call a professional who can take care of the problem quickly and without a lot of fuss. Our solution to the water leak will last longer than any DIY technique.
If you can locate the leak, patch it temporarily with leak tape or a rubber sheet and a compression clamp. This will keep the mess under control and still be easy to remove when the plumber arrives. Whatever you do, don’t wait to call for help. Leaks never get better on their own.
